Coral reef fish on the dinner table


[ We are gradually eating all the coral reef fish into extinction! ]

300 thousand kilograms of coral reef fish are consumed in Taiwan each year. In the Kenting area alone, 30 thousand kilograms of
coral reef fish are consumed each year.

Homeless fish!






Coral reefs have suffered degradation due to factors
such as the emission of waste water, pollution of the
oceans, maritime construction, human a ctivity and the
Greenhouse effect. Coral reef fish are therefore losing the
homes in which they exist making them homeless and
causing them to wander about the sea. They are not only
losing their homes, but are also losing their food sources.

Households are becoming the cemeteries of coral reef fish



The colorful skin coral reef fish posses and the many patterns they have on them have made them popular to both aquarium owners and average citizens alike. They are being captured and then sold in aquariums, after which they become a pet in people's homes.

Most aquatic systems do not provide coral reef fish with the environments they require and more often than not, these fish tanks become the final resting place for coral reef fish.

Coral reef fish are good gardeners


Coral reef fish gnaw at the algae on the surface of coral and clean the surface of reefs allowing coral to grow. In this way, the ecological balance of coral reefs is not disturbed because algae will not overgrow and take space away from coral.

Coral reef fish help other organisms


The gaps caused by herbivorous coral reef fish when they search for and feed on the algae attached on reefs is helpful to the implanting of offspring of benthos that dwell in the ocean. This also helps boost the diversity of organisms that exist in coral reefs.

They are the creators of coral sand!


The excrement that herbivorous coral reef fish leave behind after feeding on algae is a major source of coral sand. Coral sand provides a home to many different organisms.

Inextricable links


In the ecosystem of coral reefs, fish and other organisms are inextricably linked. With fewer numbers of coral reef fish, algae will grow out of control, which not only hampers the growth of coral, but also impacts newgatively on the
space available for organisms to dwell, As well as their number
of food sources. Ultimately, the fertility of coral reefs is reduced.
